Sterling silver “Big Crane” petroglyph pendant, set on sterling silver chain.
The pendant measures approximately 1″ tall. The imprint of a petroglyph crane is etched deep into the silver. This crane image is inspired by my favourite petroglyph, the Basketmaker Big Crane, in Utah, USA. What is that next to the crane? The sun (I like to think so), an egg, or a basket?? I love how petroglyphs are open to different interpretation.
The pendant has been given a textured and distressed finish to create a sandstone appearance, like a wearable piece of rock art. It was then oxidised to highlight all the detailing and lightly polished for a subtle shine. Set on a lightly oxidised 18.5″ sterling silver chain, this appears delicate yet rugged, perfect for wearing alone or layering with other necklaces.
Bird cave art is found at petroglyph sites around the world, in various forms and shapes, althought the crane form is rarer than most. Believed to symbolise longevity and creativity, the crane also conveys protection. As a creative, I am spiritually drawn to this image, and have longed for some time to recreate it in metal. The silver somehow seems to glow from behind this piece, as if the soul of the image is pushing through the metal.
Wear it as a reminder to do something every day, no matter how small, that makes your soul shine brighter.
As every piece is made individually by my own hand (no mass-producing here!), there will be very slight differences in forging which will make yours unique to you.
